Good story Ken, trouble is to when the system is doing all it can, i.e. Outflow valves both fully closed then as soon as you reduce to idle the the problem escalates.
I'll write a story about that when I have a little more time.

My empathy for you folks about these miserable tax calculations. To be fair (and legal) you do have to jump through a lot of hoops. In the end, your trouble is probably worth the effort, but why does this have to be so difficult for folks with such small incomes? Your union contract ought to give you an extra $500 per year, just to manage the accounting. It looks like a mess to me. At least Ken has developed and shared a spreadsheet routine that will help your personal accountants figure it out. Too damn many rules! -C.

Folks,

you can email payroll at 'payroll.queries@virginblue.com.au' or maybe it's changed to @virginaustralia..., and they'll email you a list of all your allowances for the period you request...

Cheers,

Hello C

Since this time the Company has changed it's policy in this area - at least in it's own aircraft. Were I to travel across the Pacific (or to the next City) on one of our aircraft today, I could expect (or at least hope for) a more comfortable seat - that's just one of the tangible benefits of our new CEO.

That said, were I to contemplate the exact same trip again today, I would still be in Economy/Coach. Right or Wrong, this is pretty standard. In any of my previous Carrier's - both large international full service Airlines - any time I was duty travelling around the world on other carriers - I would always be in coach/economy.

In my experience, that's the way of all airlines (especially the LCC's) - when you're on someone else's plane (and therefore real money is involved) - you're on the cheapest fare. After all it's not as though I'm a Lawyer or an Accountant or anything ... :)

Sir,
I'm only begining part five or six of your saga, but I'm already LMAO! There you are, an experienced training captain, headed off to Seattle to collect your airline's newest, finest airplace, yet suffering across the Pacific ina coach seat. What the hell is the matter with your "V" airline? In a few days you will be front face of your line, probably driving Sir Richard to Poarts down under and they cannot (or will not) arrange at least a Business Class seaet for you? I am horrified to say the least. For the return trip, of course you have the best seat in the tube, you get to drive! But on the ferry route, one would think that the "V Line" could do a little better for their lead captain.
I'll continue reading and I hope that your circumstances improve as bit. Even if the "V line" had to purchase your trans-PAC seat, something a little better than coach seems in order. Duh?

Hi Elise - sorry I came back to you so late on this.

The amount has been constant since it first came in on 02.May. I can tell you that:
Sat -> Thu AUH is 1551 AED
Tue -> Fri SYD/LAX/SYD is $198 USD

Remember the amounts can (and should) change with different arrival/departure times and length of stay so for example a 3 day BNE/LAX/MEL could be different to a 3 day SYD/LAX/SYD.

I suggest contacting Dave Kienzle about amounts. Payroll must have a record.

Hi Ken,

Thanks very much for this file. I have been putting off doing my tax for some time now but find that my appointment with Geoff is approaching at the end of this week hence I've had to get down to business.

I just have a quick question re completing the file. You mention putting in the amount of money received at the hotel in cash in one of the columns. I personally haven't recorded the amount I've received in cash and was wondering if there is any record that the company keep? I have a pretty good idea about how much I've received each time as it only tends to change by a couple of dollars but in the essence of tax, I'd like to get it right if I can!
